Iowa Right to Life Appeals Campaign Finance Decision

by Ryan Koopmans | March 12, 2012

By Ryan Koopmans

Iowa Right to Life is taking its case to the Eighth Circuit. Last year the organization challenged the constitutionality of Iowa’s new campaign finance in federal court in Des Moines. Chief Judge Robert Pratt dismissed the case last month, after the Iowa Supreme Court ruled in December that groups like Iowa Right to Life that make independent expenditures are not required to register as political action committees. (Our earlier coverage of the case is here and here.)

Iowa Right to Life has now appealed Chief Judge Pratt’s decision to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. The parties will submit briefs this spring and will likely argue to a three-judge panel next fall.
