by Rox Laird | August 26, 2024

The 2024-25 term of the Iowa Supreme Court will get under way Sept. 6 with the Court’s first scheduled oral argument to be held at the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City. Oral arguments in nine cases will be heard Sept. 11 and 12 in the Supreme Court courtroom in the Judicial Branch Building in Des Moines. Five cases will be submitted to the Court without oral argument in September. [Go to On Brief’s “Cases in the Pipeline” page to read briefs filed in the September cases.]

The Court will hear arguments during at least one session each month of the coming term, through April 2025, before the justices begin their two-month administrative term in July.

All oral argument sessions of the Iowa Supreme Court are open to the public, either in person or on the Court’s YouTube channel. In addition, the Court travels to other Iowa communities to give more Iowans the opportunity to see how the appellate process works. The justices typically meet with students at local high schools and invite the public to post-argument receptions to meet members.

In addition to its trip to Iowa City, the Court will take oral argument sessions on the road to three other Iowa communities: Harlan on Sept. 24; Marshalltown on Nov. 19; and Lamoni on April 22, 2025. The Court will hear arguments at Drake Law School in Des Moines April 3, 2025, and in a special evening session Oct. 8 in the historic Supreme Court courtroom in the state Capitol, and an evening session in the Judicial Branch Building courtroom Feb. 11 or 17.
